Inspired by the current obsession with austerity chic. Digging deep into the reasons for which we hold our cultural values and to focus on the eccentric Victorian architecture enthusiast Sir John Betjeman and his peculiarly nostalgic series of Shell Guides to English Counties.

Examining Betjeman’s impact on our cultural imagination through these guides, exploring the reasons he held these sentimental perspectives. Reconsider our own perceptions of what England and Englishness really mean.
